| UNPRECEDENTED | 2020
During the earliest weeks of the covid-19 pandemic, I captured portraits of everyday people at everyday places, wearing protective ensembles to keep them safe. The energy in public spaces was palpable. These photographs were taken on medium format film in Elkridge, MD. I further explored self-portraiture around my home and photographed my children as we all felt powerless, isolated and anxious during this unprecedented chapter in our history.
In these mixed media paintings, I explored layering of different types of marks to represent lives lost or nonsensical lines of disconnection. Feelings of loss of control was honored through a process of shooting double exposures with irrepressible media. Materials such as disinfectant was used to spread turbulent washes of ink across wet paper while washing away the darkness in several images.
