RECLAIMED.
Suspended between reality and a warping in space, Reclaimed, is a series of mixed media paintings that visualize the markings of our personal timeline and trauma. Over time, our bodies visibly become a time capsule with residue from our histories such as scars, stretch marks and wrinkles. Energetic lines, slashes, tallies and scribbles layer upon the figure as documentation of their experiences, exposing the unseen fragments that womxn’s bodies accumulate. Through an intuitive process of combining image transfers, compiling imperfect marks and a disentanglement in painting, the subject is transported onto a new space where an enchanting sanctuary is created for them to counter their trajectory with anxiety and reclaim power.

In "Strong Black Womxn", a space has been created that honors the anxiety that stems from the Strong Black Womxn complex. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA), data has shown that for Black womxn, anxiety is more chronic and intense than for White people. In many situations, they have been told that they are the first and therefore must be the best, or twice as good while everyone is watching them. The pressure that this experience builds is unnerving and real. The layering of imperfect marks, scratching away from its surface and tallies of score - are pieces to process what this experience must be like, or how I envision it to be because I can’t possibly know what this must be like.
